What we are
Welcome to Newhaven Country Market webpage. The Newhaven Country Market, also known as the Hillcrest Country Market, has been running now for 16 years and is part of the UK wide Country Markets Scheme. It is a cooperative of traders who have a direct relationship with the products they sell and are often available to talk to you about their produce, goods or services.
When you buy from your local country market you are part of a movement to bring the power back to the community. Buying from local people means that you are directly helping them and not giving your money to distant shareholders who have no connection or investment in our community.
Where we are
The Market is based in the main hall at the Hillcrest Centre and is open every Thursday between 9.45am and 1.00pm with special themed events throughout the year. The venue has plenty of parking spaces, automatic doors, disabled access and toilets. The Hillcrest Café, open 9.30 – 4.00pm for tea, coffee and cakes, serves home-cooked food from midday.
You can find us on Facebook at ‘Hillcrest Country Market’. ‘Like’ our page to get updates on products and services that we offer at the market, as this can change throughout the year.
So what can you find at the Hillcrest Country Market?
Home-cooked food – lovingly made…..
The Hillcrest Country Market prides itself on the quality of the home-made and local produce which includes cakes and biscuits, meat, fish and vegetable pies, traditional sweeties, jams, chutneys, preserves and Indian & Mediterranean cuisine. All food is made in kitchens that have been checked by Trading Standards and produced by people who hold current Food Hygiene Certificates.
|“Mass-produced ready meals are made with profit in mind, home-cooked food is made with love”|
Garden plants and produce (in season) – skilfully grown and harvested…..
Produce is fresher, cheaper, seasonal and locally grown in members’ gardens or vegetable plots. Members don’t use pesticides or artificial fertilisers so all produce is chemical free. Beans, tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, cucumbers, herbs, and much more are available when they are in season. By actively supporting our plant and vegetable growers you are reducing the number of air miles it takes to get food to the table.
As Spring arrives so do customers thinking about their bedding plants and hanging baskets. Jane T grows a wide range of hardy bedding plants and after Easter she starts taking orders for her beautiful hanging baskets. Come and speak to Jane about what she can offer and how to place an order.
Cheese, honey, oils, wholefoods & free-range eggs – carefully sourced…..
David and Eleanor sell a wide range of local cheeses including Brighton Blue, Flower Marie, Sussex Slipcote and many more. Who’d have thought that Sussex had so many wonderful cheeses? Our free-range eggs come from a farm in Tarring Neville and the honey bees do their work in and around Seaford and East Dean. A variety of fruit including apples, pears and cherries, is also often available, depending on the harvest.
The wholefood stall sells a selection of organic nuts, seeds, beans, pulses, rice, oats, herb teas and coconut oil, along with leaflets and information about nutrition and sprouting. Most nuts, brazils and cashews for instance, are not grown in the UK, but all the products are sourced from Infinity Foods cooperative in Brighton and offered at the best prices. It’s as local as we can get.
Hand-made cards, clothes, bags and unique crafted items – creatively knitted, crocheted, sewn, carved, sculpted or painted……
The market celebrates a host of creative skills from its members such as knitting, sewing, crochet, card-making, painting, stencilling, sculpting, wood-working, design, and much more. You can find items specifically made for babies, children, adults and even pets and who wouldn’t appreciate a unique, lovingly hand-made gift more than a mass produced item and often for a much better price.
Mending and alterations while you wait (mostly) – expertly provided…..
June generally has her sewing machine at the market and can often mend or make simple alterations while you wait.
Special Orders and Commissions…..
Members will always consider accepting special orders or commissions. Come and speak to one of us at any time.
